The Nutella Cookie Legacy: From Giandujot to Global Icon
Few desserts capture the imagination quite like a Nutella cookie, where rich, creamy-chocolate hazelnuts spread meets the beloved crunch of a homemade cookie. At The Cookie Bar Kenya, our Nutella cookie pays tribute to tradition while adding bold flavor, mindful of both history and innovation.
The story begins with a simple response to Italy to chocolate shortages in the 1940s. Pietro Ferrero, a baker from Piedmont, added abundant hazelnuts with limited cocoa to make a spread paste known as pasta giandujot in 1946. This gooey paste eventually became Supercrema (1951), which developed into the beloved Nutella in 1964, thanks to culinary vision and craftsmanship.
Since then, Nutella grew into a global phenomenon- celebrated annually on World Nutella Day (5th February) and loved by millions worldwide.Â
The rise of Nutella Cookies
The delight of chocolate and hazelnuts didn’t remain confined to toast. In 2019, Ferrero launched Nutella Biscuits– a crunchy cookie shell filled with characteristic Nutella cream. Their debut in Europe led to unprecedented demand, selling nearly 6 million boxes within just four weeks.
The cookie trend didn’t just stop there. Traditional stuffed cookies- those baked dough pockets fillings like Nutella- highlight the versatility and enduring appeal of this flavor combination.
